Choosing a Grafting Knife

Between straight and curved handles, much comes down to personal preference. Straight handles favor precise, flat cuts, while curved handles are often preferred for comfort during longer work sessions.

Matching knife orientation to your dominant hand provides better control. Some practitioners keep both left- and right-handed knives to access difficult grafting positions.

Usage Notes

Grafting knives are commonly used for veneer and side-veneer grafts, as well as smoothing wounds prior to applying cut paste. They also offer fine control when shaping deadwood or defining live veins during jin and shari work.

Pro tip: Consider keeping one knife dedicated to grafting and another for deadwood carving to preserve edge sharpness.
