Mountain Moss ("Yamagoke" in Japanese) is the go-to top dressing for satsuki azalea bonsai. The moss preserves moisture near the surface of the soil to keep trees from drying out.
The most common alternative for non-azalea growers is to use white sphagnum moss, aka New Zealand Sphagnum moss. Both mosses can be used interchangeably, but there are a few differences between the two:
- Azalea growers like the way mountain moss locks together to form a protective barrier on the surface of the soil
- Growers of all other species like using long-fibered white sphagnum moss to keep soil in place when the surface of the soil isn't flat
- Growers of all other species like using white sphagnum moss grated through a sieve to create a thin layer of moss to preserve moisture near the surface of the soil
- Mountain moss may acidify the root environment slightly more than white sphagnum moss

Sue I was able to place an order thru the online website. They graciously awaited arrival of several of the items I wanted. When all was available, my order was wrapped and shipped to a location close to me for pickup. There was a small tear in one of the bottom bags in one corner of the pallet, but I was able to tape it up, no problem. Maybe lost 1/2 cup of akadama. Easy ordering, easy pickup, will do again. Other items I have ordered thru the online site in the past came quickly, intact, without issue. Thanks.
